October brought an incredible buzz to Cardiff as thousands of runners took to the streets for the Cardiff Half Marathon. And here at RosMedics, we’ve been busy helping people focus on something that’s just as important as the training itself – recovery!
Whether you completed your first half marathon, achieved a personal best or simply enjoyed the atmosphere, running 13.1 miles is a huge physical achievement.
But what happens after you cross the finish line?
Running a half marathon puts significant demands on your muscles, joints and energy stores. While the sense of achievement is fantastic, your body needs time to repair, replenish and recover.
At RosMedics, we’ve seen plenty of interest in our Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) sessions around the Cardiff Half Marathon, with runners looking for ways to support their post-race recovery.
It’s been lovely to see so many people taking their recovery seriously!
1. Rehydrate properly
You’ve lost fluids and electrolytes through sweating. Replenish these gradually with water, regular meals and electrolytes when needed.
2. Refuel your muscles
Your body needs carbohydrates to restore energy and protein to support muscle repair. A balanced meal after your run is a great place to start.
3. Prioritise sleep
Sleep is one of your body’s most powerful recovery tools. Aim for 7–9 hours of good-quality sleep to support muscle repair and overall recovery.
4. Keep moving – gently!
You don’t need to spend the next three days on the sofa! Gentle walking and light mobility exercises can help reduce stiffness. Avoid rushing straight back into intense training.
5. Consider additional recovery support
At RosMedics, we offer Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), which involves breathing oxygen in a pressurised chamber. It’s an area of growing interest in sports recovery, although evidence that it speeds recovery after routine endurance exercise remains limited.
We also offer infrared sauna sessions, which some people find relaxing after exercise. These should only be considered once you’re properly rehydrated.
One of the biggest messages we share at RosMedics is that looking after your health shouldn’t begin when something goes wrong.
Whether you’re a regular runner, a weekend walker or someone trying to become more active, recovery, nutrition, hydration and sleep all play an important role in maintaining good health.
To everyone who took part in the Cardiff Half Marathon – congratulations!
And to everyone who visited us for recovery support, thank you for making RosMedics part of your journey.
Remember, the finish line may mark the end of the race, but looking after your body is an ongoing commitment.
