DERMAL FILLER TREATMENTS

Smooth your skin, or give it volume with lip and cheek augmentation

Dermal fillers, known by doctors and aestheticians as Hyaluronic Acid, is a gel-like water-holding molecule that is naturally found in the body, however more is injected into certain areas of the body to fill areas, most commonly to get those bigger lips, or cheeks.

Dermal fillers can be put into two categories, wrinkle fillers or volumisers.

These are injectable fillers broadly based on hyaluronic acid. Those are used to fill in wrinkles that real the muscles beneath the skin causing puckering.

Fillers can be used in combination for resistant lines/wrinkles.

They provide a youthful appearance that can last from 6-18 months depending on the type of filler and where it is used.

The hyaluronic acid gel comes in a range of consitencies which is injected below the dermis (skin) using an ultra fine needle. This gel physically fills in the wrinkles whilst the hyaluronic acid is hydrophilic attracting moisture with lasting results.

Areas generally targeted are:

  • fine lines
  • nasolabial lines
  • marionnette lines
  • mandibular lines

Your clinician will advise you on the most suitable filler so it is very important to find a highly skilled and trained physician that you feel comfortable with.

As we age there is a natural loss of facial fat and collagen. This gives the appearance of flat cheeks, thinner lips and reduced contour to the jawline.

Cheeks sink downwards, the chin goes limp and the face becomes broader towards the bottom with the appearance of jowls.

The result is deeper winkles, particularly around the nose and mouth and also on the chin. Cheek bones and cheeks are areas most effective by the loss of volume.

Facial fillers are used to plump volumised cheeks, define and volumise lips counterbalancing the contour deficits creating a lifting and volumising effect.

Typical treated areas are:

  • Cheek bones
  • Hollow cheek
  • Lower jaw line
  • Chin fold
  • Contour of the lip (vermillion border)
  • Augmentation of lips

THE TREATMENT / PROCEDURE

TREATMENT PROCEDURE

The clinician will often suggest topical and anaesthetic or injected anaesthetic to make the procedure as comfortable and pain free as possible. Typically a treatment session including consultation will last no more than 30 minutes. The effects will be visible immediately.

SIDE EFFECTS

You may experience temporary:
  • Mild swelling
  • Mild pain
  • Itching
  • Bruising or discolouration
You may feel the filler under the skin especially in the lip area for a short time after treatment. However, over time the filler will integrate and cannot be felt.

AFTER CARE

As with all hyaluronic acid fillers, there may be some irritation immediately after treatment, this can include; swelling, itching, burning, tenderness and localised redness within the area of injection. These reactions are normal and transient as they are the result of the injection itself and are generally resolved by themselves. The swelling that occurs may be quite significant and can remain up to a few days but will resolve without any intervention.

Irritation such as bruising and swelling may be reduced by the use of arnica 30c tablets, which are available at most pharmacies. You can also apply ice packs to the affected area to reduce inflammation.

It is advised that you stop the use of aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce the risk of bruising. If you have a history of lip or facial cold sores you will require a course of antiviral drugs to prevent or control an outbreak of the virus before or after the procedure as advised by your physician.

It is important to wait until the above injection related symptoms have resolved before you see the final result.

After lip augmentation has been injected the treating physician may mold and gently massage the product in place. It is not advised for you to do any further massage to that area unless small, pea-sized lumps are visible or felt in the lip. This should only be done if you are advised to by your physician.

It is important to note that your physician will have place measured and equal aliquots of product into each area. Any asymmetry will be due to natural asymmetry already present.

Additionally the final aesthetic result and length is dependent on the condition of the skin, area treated the amount of product injected and lifestyle factors such as smoking, nutrition, sun exposure and exercise.

It is recommended that you avoid applying makeup to the treated area for the first 24hours.

Also refrain from vigorous exercise, sun, heat exposure, saunas and Turkish baths for at least 2 to 3 weeks after the treatment.
Please note that if you experience swelling, tenderness, unexplained bruising or skin changes lasting more that 3 to 5 days you must inform the clinic immediately.
